New user to my X12
loving the simplicity of ripping music but have a problem with the unit hanging and playback issues that is driving me nuts
i have ripped about 60 CDs to flac lossless and everything completes the ripping process fine
however, the unit now seems to randomly lock up and become unresponsive to button presses and the animations on screen (text scrolling etc) stop for about 30-40 secs
when trying to playback music, same sort of issue, the track will play back fine for a few mins, but then I'll notice the timer counter stop incrementing and about 30 sec later I'll loose all audio ... Everything stays hanging for another 30-40secs and then springs back to life .. The timer jumps to where the track would have got to if everything had played fine.
i have tried various tracks ... Same effect and never in the same place twice, so I don't think it's a problem with the ripped files.
the fact the unit also hangs occasionally when just browsing menus and again become unresponsive makes me think the processor or system is busy doing something else.
what I have noticed also is that if i go to change the quality under the ripping menu it still say I have 580 files to convert and that changing the setting will affect those files.
i have tried just leaving the unit switched on for two days solid but that 580 figure has not decreased...
short of returning it and trying a new one, I'm stumped...
anyone had a similar experience or any ideas what might be wrong?
UPDATE:
I tried to downgrade the X12 firmware from R14 to R11 (the only earlier one that seems to be available on the Novafidelity download page) ... Was a wasted effort as even with auto update off and manually selecting the correct pkg, the X12 refused to take the earlier firmware as an update ... not sure if this is a feature .. i.e. You can only upgrade not go back?
Finally, I thought the only thing I hadn't tried was a new hard drive ... So 20 mins later I had swapped out the Hitachi 1Tb 3.5" drive with a Samsung 1Tb 3.5" alternative. Ripped a couple of CDs with the same same settings and hey..presto ... Everything was working fine ... Smooth and not hang ups.
So it looks like it was the drive, although I don't think its faulty however when I removed the Hitachi Drive from the X12 it was almost too hot to hold comfortably ... Therefore I'm guessing that the drive may have been overheating and shutting down causing the hang ups ... There isn't any cooling in the X12 so it may be my Hitachi drive runs hotter than most and without any cooling its started to play up.
so now I'll see how I get on with the Samsung drive ...
does anyone one know if I can use an external sub enclosure to transfer my original database/ music back to the X12 via the USB interface, save re ripping it all again?
Update 2:
i couldn't work out how to transfer my old DB from the hitachi drive so, started afresh today ... So far so good, have had none of the issues that I had previously and can now do other things that weren't working properly such as listening to ripped music, whilst ripping new discs and remotely accessing the media server from my PC.
as an experiment I temporarily hooked the hitachi drive back up, this time not in the X12 and stone cold ... Straight away I have the same issues ... so even though the hitachi drive was very hot originally, I don't think it was a temperature related issue. Given the fact I can read the disk fine with Ext2Fsd from my PC, it seems to be some sort of compatibility issue...
anyway, very happy now and only about another 600 disks to go ;-), but first will start a back up to an external drive (does anyone know if the DB backups are incremental?)
