Can the x40 be connected to a laptop via usb and playing a file from the X40 database to the laptop in order to use jriver or other program to apply digital eq, then out of laptop to an outboard DAC? Is this possible or are the USB ports on X40 input only? Thanks in advance for any assistance on this.

The USB host ports are for connecting things like a WIFI dongle, USB keyboard, USB stick or an external HDD. The X40 does not have a USB audio output or input connector. If you compare the connections on the back of the X40 to those on the X45, for example. you can see that it does have both a USB audio input and a USB audio output.
If you are going to use JRiver on the P.C and output to an external DAC, then I can't see how the X40 or any similar device would fit into that picture.

The x40 is able to act as a media server. I use windows media player which has the client to do this. I also have a very old version of twonky which allows me to add remote libraries and play them. Does jriver not allow you to add a media server?
