Hi, I'm trying to back up the Music DB on my x40 to a new Samsung SSD USB external hard drive. I go to SetUp >Music DB >Backup to Background mode > but then it doesn't show anything in the Backup Device only NET, so it doesn't seem to be reading the USB Samsung HD. I have the USB drive connected to the front USB socket on the x40 and the light on the Samsung drive comes on. I have formatted the SSD hard drive in a PC using the sofware which was on the SSD hard drive and I've not used the SSD HD on anything else. Anyone any ideas what I'm doing wrong? I'm sure bertiebacon will have some suggestions if you are about? Thanks.

Okay, I've reformatted the USB drive to NTFS and that seems to have solved the problem. Out of interest the x40 doesn't seem to give any indication of how far along the backup process it is? The Music DB seems to be backing up as the light on the USB drive is flashing, the screen on the x40 has defaulted to the Music DB menu with the Backup option highlighted is this correct? It doesn't actually show the files which are being backed up in real time. How do you know when the backup is complete, does the display on the x40 indicate that its finished backup? This is the first time I've backed up the Music DB.

Hi chris123 I don't know if this will work on the X40, as the manual does not give any information on checking the backup status. However the manuals for the current models show that you can check the backup status as follows: Go to SETUP > MusicDB > Backup, Place the cursor on the 'backup', Press MENU key, You can choose 'State of Progress' or 'Backup Result.
I do know that it can take a very long time to do a full backup. Hours or probably days depending on how much data you have to backup, as unfortunately with the X40 you are limited to the incredibly slow speed of USB 2, which has a max data rate of 480 Mbps.
Hope this helps.

Hi Bertiebacon, thank you as ever. What I did in the end was select the x40 to close down when the backup was complete, that way at least I knew when the back up was completed as the machine shut down. It did take a while to backup, but the machine eventually shut down and backup seems fine. I will try what you suggested next time I do a backup.

You need to use the remote menu. Select db Select backup Enter menu Follow on screen instructions.
The next backup will be incremental and after the db checks only the changed (new) music files will be backed up

Hi, I know this is a bit late but I have the the x35 and if I choose not to backup in background mode as well as shutdown you will see all albums being backed up and the progress. Hope this helps.

Backup in Foreground prevents the Novafidelity being used during backup. Backup in Background allows all functions of the Novafidelity to be used during backup even whilst monitoring the progress of the backup.
