I have an X40 roughly 5 years old and yesterday the internal dvd writer stopped reading cd's prior to ripping to hdd. The model of writer inside is an LG super multi dvd writer Model GA50N which appears to be no longer available.
There appears to be many writers similar but with a cd tray which extends in and out as required. However, the version I require has no cd tray, you just insert the cd through a slot in the front of the main X40.
Can anyone help me find a internal writer suitable please.

Hi, I'm also having the same problem in that most CDs I'm now inserting into the x40 won't read track information prior to ripping, they just show as Track 1, Track 2 etc. I know this happens with some obscure CDs but this is happening with CDs that previously the machine read okay. Does this mean the DVD writer is faulty and I will need to replace the DVD drive? Thanks.

Having looked at this again, I see that I'm getting a freeDB connect fail come up when I try and rip a CD, which would indicate a problem with connection to the freeDB rather than an issue with the drive itself. Having a look at a thread on the x10 forum with a similar issue it suggested making sure there was an internet connection. It seems that the installed freeDB is only looked at if there is no internet connection. I have an internet connection to the x40 which seems to be fine. I also found that on the odd occasion the machine reads the CD text, that no album art would come up when I tried Google or Amazon through the machine, and only Bing came up with any art, maybe this is linked to the freeDB access issue? Any help would be appreciated, also no one is answering the phone at SCV (Novafidelity). I'm on Firmware 0073, the machine doesn't want to update to 0075.

Thanks BertieBacon, very helpful as ever. To delete the current freeDB I guess I follow the setup / CD ripping / freeDB Delete route on the x40 and it will delete the DB?
Can I ask another question, I have two tracks which have failed to convert, is there any way of knowing which these two tracks are so I can delete the album so I don't keep get the error message come up every time I power down the machine? Thanks.

Yes, just delete the freedb in the settings menu. As far as I can tell the only way to figure out which album/s have unconverted tracks. Would be to use the sort button on the remote to order the albums by last ripped, and then place the cursor over each album and press the info key on the remote. This will tell you if there are any unconverted tracks, although I don't know if tracks that have failed to convert would still be classed as unconverted, but i assume so. There is a bit of information in the X40 manual, section 7-4 page 47: www.cocktailaudio.com/home/data/manual/X40_Manual.pdfIf the 2 tracks that have failed to convert are a recent problem, then hopefully you will find them in one of the last albums that you have ripped. If not then this could be one of those database confusion things, that running DB Recovery sorts out. Either way, thank's chris123 & glad I could help.

Thanks for your time replying Bertie Bacon, very much appreciated. I'm struggling with the freeDB uploading to the x40. I have downloaded the freeDB zip file onto a USB stick in its unzipped form and put the USB stick int the x40. I go the the FreeDB Update on the setup / CD ripping menu and when I press OK I get the message "FReeDB not installd Please install FreeDB". I click on OK but this just returns me to the previous menu. If I click on FreeDB Install I'm taken to a menu with the options HDD1 / USB1 and NET. So the machine can clearly see the USB stick, if I take the USB stick out the USB option disappears. When I select USB1 it puts me to the USB1 menu with just one option which is Up Dir (Up directory I guess) when I OK this it just returns me to the previous HDD1 / USB1 / NET menu. I can't seem to get it to look for the zip file on the USB stick and download it. Any thoughts much appreciated.

Thanks also for the links to the German and Italian cocktail audio sites, as you say they are quite helpful. I will try and see if I can download the latest firmware and see if I have any luck installing that through the USB port.

Just tried updating the Firmware to the latest version which I downloaded onto the USB stick. Same issue as before, it sees the USB stick but when you OK the USB icon it takes you to the Up Dir menu as it did when trying to instal the FreeDB.

Gets more curious! I've done a factory reset and tried to install the freeDB via the USB again. This time the machine picks up the new Firmware file on the USB, but doesn't show the freeDB zip file. When I try and update the Firmware via the USB stick it doesn't pick up the new firmware file on the stick at all. So the freeDB file is not seen at all and the new firmware file is seen when I try to upload the freeDB, but not when I try to actually upload the new firmware?

I would start by Formating the USB stick (this will erase all the data on the stick) try FAT32 or NTFS. Copy the FreeDB-complete-20200401.zip file to the USB stick, when finished, eject the USB stick and install on the X40. If the X40 still cannot see or install the freedb, then try using a different USB stick or even a spare external HDD, devices and USB sticks sometimes don't play well with each other.
If that works, then use the same method to install the firmware update, i.e. format the USB drive and copy ONLY the R0075.zip file to the USB stick. Keep the original Zip files on your P.C. in case you need to reinstall at a later date.
If you are getting nowhere with this, then perhaps the X40's HDD has a problem. Which may explain the two tracks that failed to convert and why you can't install the firmware update or freedb. You can Run the File System Fix, section 5-7-7 page 35 of the manual or better still, try another HDD if you have a spare one.

Bertie Bacon, you are a star! Did what you said, reformatted a new USB to FAT32 and downloaded the freeDB onto it and it worked, the machine saw the file and downloaded the database. So now I'm up and running again, able to rip Cds with track info being picked up on DB now installed on the machine. Alas I still couldn't update the firmware as the machine still doesn't see the file on the USB stick. I reformatted the usb to FAT32 again and then download another copy of the 0075 firmware from the CA site just in case, but still no luck, the machine sees the usb but not the firmware file. I'll try some other usb sticks and see if I get anywhere. Just pleased to have the freeDB up and running and to be able to use the machine again, even if I have to live with an old version of the firmware. Thanks again.

No problem chris123, and it's great that you've managed to get the freedb installed.
As for the firmware, unfortunately I didn't notice that cocktailaudio.com & cocktailaudio.de name the firmware .zip files differently, and I think that will be why the X40 can't see it on the USB stick. It looks like cocktailaudio.de & cocktailaudio.it get to test the beta versions (B0075) and the new firmware releases (R0075) first, probably because they both have very active forums, with clearly knowledgeable administrators. While I'm sure that you could install R0075 by changing the name on the .zip file. I would wait until cocktailaudio.com have X40_R0075.zip ready to download as it will have been thoroughly tested by then.
