I wonder if anyone can help with this one, I am contemplating getting a X50 is there some way to copy the ripped CDs presently on the HDD of the X40 onto a formatted HDD of a X50?

Thanks bertiebacon that's helpful. For the layman how do you physically connect the two machines and then which menu do you go through to on both machines to actually transfer the files? Any guidance would be much appreciated. Thanks.

If your X40 has the latest firmware and you have backed up the database to an external USB hard drive. Then it should be as simple as connecting the USB hard drive to the X50 and restoring the database to the new HDD in the X50. Unless the X50 already has music files in it's database that you want to keep, then transferring or copying files would be a harder and longer way round of doing things, as the copied files would have to be imported to the X50, as they will need to be re indexed into the existing database on the X50. Backing up the X40 and restoring it on the X50 would be simpler, as it is backing up and restoring the files and the database. However when doing this it would erase any existing data on the X50's HDD. If you do not have a backup of the X40, then it would be a good idea to do one. The X40 manual section 5-1-6 Backup and 5-1-7 Restore cover how to do this. While it may be possible to transfer the music files directly from the X40 to the X50 over the network or perhaps even by USB cable. However not having two machines myself, then I could not say. It's possible that you could just take the HDD/s out of the X50 and put in the one from the X40 and it would all work perfectly, but I wouldn't try that unless you have done a fresh backup of the X40 first. Plus as the X50 can take two HDD's in a RAID configuration, then choosing that configuration would be something that has to be done right at the start, with blank HDD's.

Hi Bertiebacon, just wish to thank you for the time you have taken to post these very helpful instructions. It's given me the confidence to have a go, now seeing how to do it. At the moment the two machines are not in the same location, but I can see the first stage is to back up the X40 onto a HDD which I will do. Firmware is up to date and there are no files on the HDD on the X50 so should be straight forward. Again, many thanks, your help really is much appreciated.

Thank you chris123 for your kind reply. I'm glad that I could help, and I hope everything goes smoothly with your upgrade. You didn't mention how much data you had on the X40's HDD, but I'll warn you that the X40 only has USB 2.0 sockets so doing a full backup to an external HDD will be slow, really slow. Thankfully the X50 has USB 3.0 sockets so restoring the data will be a great deal faster (assuming your external HDD is USB 3.0).

Hi Bertiebacon, not sure how much is on the HDD as I can't see how you find this information from the menu?

Thanks again for this bertiebacon, I now know how to see how much of the HDD I've used. At the moment it is 0.1T. Thanks also for the link to external HDD, I had been looking at the Seagate. Once it's backed up, I guess when you back it up on subsequent occasions, it just updates from the previous time it was updated, rather than backing up the whole of the HDD again? Do you think there is much to be gained using SSD in the novafidelity? I understand they are more reliable, but not much difference in terms of speed?

No problem chris123. After you have done the first full backup any subsequent ones are incremental. If you only have 0.1 TB (100 gigabytes) on the X40, then that should not take too long to do.
Apart from the price there are practically no downsides to using an SSD over a mechanical HDD. The lack of any moving parts makes them intrinsically more reliable and they are silent in operation, which may be the the best reason for buying one to use in the X50. While you may not notice any real speed increases in everyday operation, certain tasks that require reading and writing of multiple small files, like bulk tagging etc. Should show a noticeable increase in speed.
I don't know how many albums you have to add to the X40/50 or what format they will be in, but If you don't think that you will need terabytes of storage and you can easily fit them all on a smaller, say 500GB SSD. Then at that size the prices are tempting.

Hi Bertiebacon, so far I've loaded up almost 400 CDs in FLAC format. I was surprised how little room they took up on the HDD. Thanks for the advise on the SSD, I'm mulling over the option, the SSD is quite tempting, although as you say they get pricey with increased size. Really must spend time with the manual, I only use a fraction of the functionality. Thanks again for your responses on this forum, I'm sure they are helpful to lots of others besides me. I finally get to try out a x50 next week.
