Hi All,
I have been using my x12 for past few days and noticed serious overheating problem. The metal back plate and heat sink get hot after few minutes of use. Same thing happens to metal part of CD tray. I tried to rip 3 CDs and found that discs become uncomfortably hot as well. I am pretty sure it is not very good for the CDs and I am quite reluctant to start ripping my CD collection. The rubberised case seems to exacerbate the problem as it works as insulation and is only slightly warm to touch. My concern is that if I carry on using x12 like that, either HDD or even x12 will give up the ghost within next few days or weeks. I was considering some DIY solution to the problem; an additional fan possibly or removing some parts of the case? Would anyone have a tip on how to reduce the amount of heat generated inside the unit or keeping it down at reasonable level? I absolutely love x12 and would like to keep it but cannot find much pleasure in listening to the music knowing about the issue.
Any help much appreciated
Mike

How old is the unit ? I have been using my X12 for over two years and have not experienced overheating. Have a word with your supplier or Sygnifi, they might have an idea.

Thanks for your response Phian, I have been using it for just over a week. The sata and power cables are very short but long enough to do some testing with hdd outside the unit. After about 30 mins of listening to the music and ripping 3 cd's the HDD, CD tray and back of x12 were only slightly warm. The temporary solution seemed to work very well but was unsightly so I opted for portable 2.5" HDD connected to the back of the streamer. I believe passive cooling is not working very well especially considering that 3.5" HDD sits very tightly inside x12 with no airflow whatsoever. Is there standard 3.5HDD inside your x12? It seems that x12 rubberised case works like very good insulation (top and sides) and gives impression that x12 does not overheats but in fact the metal back of the unit, bottom of CD tray and hdd are very hot to touch. Ps This is my second x12 as the first one would not even turn on...
