Hi
I've had an X12 for a couple of months now - onboard 1TB drive which is about 50% full.
A few glitches are irritating me:
1) Response to the remote varies from instant to incredibly sluggush.
2) When ripping or playing music every so often it will stop and reboot through the "cocktail glass/initialising" screens meaning I have to start again.
3) Every so often everything just freezes requiring a reboot.
I tried to reinstall the firmware but despite following the rather ambiguous instructions I haven't had any success in doing so (I keep getting an "incorrect file type message" when uploading the firmware).
Anyone else having problems like this or have I just got a rogue unit that needs to go back to the shop?

Hi gnome,
Out of curiosity did you manage to solve the issue?

Hi
I did manage to reinstall the firmware and I relocated the unit to somewhere a bit more open in case the problems were caused by overheating. Unfortunately the freeze/reboots still occur. The problem I have had is that due to family illness I haven't spent much time at home over the past few months so it's not been getting much use.
The good people at Novafidelity did offer to take the unit back for a look but unfortunately since they last contacted me all the running about I've been doing has meant that I haven't had a chance to contact them - I'm also keen not to have to reload nearly 2,000 CDs into a new unit!
They did say that there might be a software upgrade around Christmas which might cure things.....

Just switched it on for the first time in a few weeks and I note there is a firmware upgrade.
The freeze bug isn't one of the specific ones mentioned in the list but time will tell if it makes any difference.
Watch this space.....!

The problem in your case might be (as was in mine) 3.5" HDD inside the unit. The X12 with hard drive inside gets far too hot. Considering how much work you put into ripping your CDs I would make sure that HDD does not overheat. I bought extension sata + power cable off ebay for £2.50 and keep drive outside unit. It was not the most visually appealing solution though. Then I went for SATA - USB adaptor so I could hide HDD and connect to X12 with lengthy USB cable. Finally opted for small 2.5" external portable 1TB(£49)- smallest, neatest and quickest solution.
Hope it helps.

Cheers - I do have an unused 1TB external drive sitting about the house as it happens. Do you simply connect yours via USB and is the data transfer a painless exercise? Also, how do you ensure the external drive is used by default as the music source?
I used the player post firmware upgrade the other night. For the first hour I was simply listening to an internet radio show that I particularly enjoy. No problems at all. Then I played an album. Again no problems. However, and this was about after 3 hours of use, I decided to play one of the playlists I had made and the reboots started up once more.

You can set database location here Setup->MusicDB->Storage Data transfer via usb, wifi or LAN is for some reason shockingly slow on X12. Before you you do anything I would simply try keeping internal HDD outside the unit for a few days. Sata + power cables are very short but long enough to let you place the drive next to X12. See if that makes any difference to stability. As for playlists I haven't got that far yet. Will do some testing when I have a moment.

Cheers.
I did try to do a transfer to a USB 2tb drive - it came up as due to take over a day. Which was fine as I was going out anyway. Only the freeze problem meant it failed after a couple of hours!

Well I 'm trying the "taking the drive outside" trick and it seems to have been working fine so far though as mentioned it's not the prettiest of arrangements.
Next is to back up to the 2TB USB drive and see if that causes a freeze!

If there is a problem with transferring your database you should be able to carry on using your old HDD by connecting it to USB through sata-usb adapter. The only drawback of this solution is additional power supply. But I am hoping X12 managed to copy your music flawlessly this time.

The back up seems to have worked. However despite changing the "storage" to USB I get a "not found" message for every view!
The HDD itself is ok outside - I've had only one random reboot since I took it outside and I had forgotten to switch it off so it had been on for hours when I got back!

I am guessing that backup has been archived somehow (zip, rar?) and you need to use import DB option to re-create working database.
PS If HDD is not in use for certain amount of time it usually shuts down.

Hi Gnome and Mike2, I also have random freezes and re-initializations on my X12. Thought it might be an overheating problem too, as the box itself gets quite hot and I note there does not appear to be any sort of fan installed. Removing the HD to external seems like a good idea so I may give that a try as ell. Cheers, GEB
