Assuming it is a standard commercial CD, the content is limited to 16 bit, sampled at 44.1 kHz (the so-called "red book" standard). Any subsequent rip cannot add to the original bit size because the content isn't there in the first place. This is true even if conversion software makes it *look* as if there has been a change. This is not a fault with the X12 which is simply dealing with what it is being presented with. It's a bit like trying to change the format of an MP3 file to WAV or FLAC. It may *look* like a WAV or FLAC file but the true content will always be the 1s and 0s of the MP3 file. A freshly ripped WAV file will have all the 1s and 0s. A WAV file converted to FLAC will retain all of the 1s and 0s. However, once a (proper) WAV or FLAC file is converted to MP3, 1s and 0s are lost and cannot be recovered with a reverse conversion. Think of this in terms of a sponge. A sponge that hasn't got pieces missing and isn't being squeezed is the WAV file. Converting it to FLAC is like squeezing the sponge but it's still all there. Converting to MP3 is like squeezing the sponge AND cutting pieces out - the latter is permanent and irreversible. The lower the quality of the MP3 file means more bits of the sponge have been cut out. The X12 will support genuine 24-bit files and they normally are found as legit downloads and/or ripped audio from some (not all) DVDs and blu-ray content. This will then need to be imported into the X12 which will recognise the bit size and sampling rate. Hopefully the above helps. Happy listening .
