Hi, just got an x40 and ripping away merrily. Concerned that I may lose everything I’m now looking to back this up to an external hard drive. I noticed that I can purchase either a USB 2.0 or 3.0 version but I’m not sure what the x40 will accept. Can anyone advise if it’s the faster USB 3.0 or the older 2.0 input. Any advice on a model to buy would also be gratefully appreciated.
Many thanks, Mike

Unfortunately the X40 only has USB 2.0 sockets. Most, if not all external hard drives are now USB 3.0 which is backwards compatible with USB 2.0, although it can only transfer data at USB 2.0 speeds when connected to a USB 2.0 socket as in the X40. The two most popular hard drive brands would be Western Digital and Seagate. You do not say what capacity you are after, but the most popular sizes are 2tb and 4tb. This is reflected in the prices, with a 2tb drive costing slightly more than a 1tb drive and a 4tb drive costing roughly the same as a 3tb drive.
I am currently using a Western Digital My Passport 4tb Portable Hard Drive USB 3.0 which replaced a Seagate Backup Plus Slim 2TB USB 3.0 External Hard Drive, after I ran out of space. Considering just how much time and effort goes into ripping and tagging your music collection. It is essential to have at least one backup copy, preferably two, as hard drives can die at anytime and nobody wants to rip all of their CD's again.

Many thanks. I have a 2T drive in my x40 so will likely purchase a 2T back up device and the Seagate you previously used gets good reviews so may go in that direction.
Unfortunately my unit seems to be playing up at the moment and goes into ‘initialising’ mode and locks up. I therefore have to switch off at the back and start again. Some times it works and other times it doesn’t. I’ve also experienced being able to access the stored music but it doesn’t recognise any discs I put in so I can’t play or rip them. I read some other posts and this has happened to others in the past and seems to be linked with the software updates. I’m currently showing X40-CA-1.0.0.r0073 and as this is showing as the latest firmware I would have thought it should all be working properly.
It’s definitely a love hate relationship at the moment as it’s the perfect piece of equipment for my needs but it’s unpredictable and unusable at times. I actually tried to switch it off 15minutes ago and it s not switching off. I’m assuming it’s doing something but as I haven’t ripped anything and as the firmware is up to date as confirmed by the unit I have no idea if this is now another fault. Many thanks again for your response which was really helpful.
