I was happily using firmware 56, but got a message that firmware 60 was available. I upgraded successfully, but now my X40 does not work.
Can I downgrade to 56 and if so how?
The problem is that most things work but there is just no sound out. I have checked the cables and all seems fine. I have looked at Setup, and again all seems as it should be.
Any suggestions?

Same problem here -- you're not crazy. No sound after new firmware installed.

Performing a factory reset fixed it for me (under settings). Oddly, it also seems to have retained the latest firmware.

Sorry for the multiple posts... not fixed. Definitely a bug. After factory reset, volume restored, but under Audio settings several controls are disabled. For example, the system defaulted to variable analogue output. When I went to change this to fixed, the option was blacked out. Rebooted and it was available again, but when selected muted the volume altogether, apparently putting back where I started from.
Doesn't this company test its releases before pushing them?!

Oh well, I'm glad it's not something weird I have done or not done.
I found that the Audio settings seem enabled if one goes straight to Settings, but are disabled if I go there while playing something. I haven't checked yet if the settings stay as they should be.
I think that in general for items with firmware, factory reset retains the current firmware, not the original, but puts all the settings to default.
There is sound from the headphone socket, I haven't tried beyond hearing that sound does come through headphones.

I am a bit scared of doing a factory reset as I don't know if it will retain my Gracenote licence.
It is possible to download the earlier firmware using a computer, but I don't know if the firmware can actually be downgraded successfully; this is possible with firmware on some devices but not on others.

I found the German forums at cocktailaudio.de/forum/forumdisplay.php?fid=33. My German isn't good, but they seem to show plenty of people with this issue, and they have a partial solution. Change the Analogue Volume Out to Variable rather than Fixed. Then reduce the volume (the vol - key on the remote) to somewhere below 80. That seems to be working for me.

Yes, but that changes the sound quality due to double amplification -- makes mine sound boomy. Not a proper solution.

Hi. No specific issue. The firmware has been updated 2 times : I am directly connected with the web and the x40 uploaded 2 times the firmware. ...

Just to say that I have had reply from Novafidelity support, confirming that the firmware can be rolled back to an earlier version.
As far as I can see, the firmware available on the Novafidelity site is version 53, whereas version 56 can be obtained from the Cocktail Audio site.

I see that the Cocktail Audio site (NOT the Novafidelity site) now has version 63 of the firmware, correcting the bug in version60.
That will be the version one now gets if updating automatically on the X490.

Thank you for above info. I have had the same problem and have just now downloaded the latest version correcting version 60. Sound is now fine.
